Everything here is so interesting, thank you! Can you tell me the painting that's used for the Woolf and Childhood course? I'm sorry I've got to it late, it sounds fabulous.
Good question Jane, I have just contacted Trudi Tate to find out! I'm hoping to share my talk here in due course. Enjoyed diving into Woolf's at times troubled, but very loving, relationship with her nephew Julian Bell.
I am absolutely fascinated with your Substack, Ann! Such a wealth of information 🤗 I will add William’s Wife to my TBR list. You mentioned Vera Brittain, author of Testament of Youth in your post that you linked and I remember reading that book several years ago. It was absolutely brilliant and my goodness, so much loss in her life but she so eloquently put her words to page.
Thank you for you lovely and very generous comment! I do love Vera Brittain's beautifully expressive memoir. Trevelyan's novels deal with quite difficult subjects, but she is always interesting and original.
I read the new book Wifedom (bio of George Orwell’s wife) last summer and found it truly gripping. Different genre, I know. But it will be interesting to compare the experiences.
If I never read another new book, I could keep myself happily immersed in rediscovered gems from the past. Congratulations on your part in bringing this one to today’s readers.

Got it! The painting is 'Young Mother Sewing' by the wonderful Mary Cassatt:

Wonderful. And thank you for re-sharing your essay on Woolf and Trevelyan.
Absolutely wonderful Ann. Thank you so much.
Oh I LOVE the sound of this... thank you Ann, I knew nothing of the book/ author.
A great treat to read part of your essay.
Thanks so much Laura. It's nice to share a longer piece sometimes, in the hope it connects with someone!
You ALWAYS connect!

William’s Wife sounds amazing! I look forward to reading your essay and the book. Thanks for sharing the essay.
Thank you Etta - it’s quite a tough read (the longterm effects of an abusive husband) but hugely impressive.

Anna Funder's book sounds so interesting - will seek it out. Thanks for the recommendation!
Sorry I didn’t include Funder’s name. Quick early morning post before coffee! Funder’s book is truly amazing. Well-researched and creative.

I know what you mean Rona - good to have such books brought back into bookshops.
